Chapter XI
King Areth I stood staring into the thicket of the Triash forest, narrowing his eyes. His cloak billowed in the breeze drifting across the plains. His silver hair flitted about his head and chest, the only animation in an otherwise statuesque posture. He closed his crimson eyes and listened. The whistle of the wind and rustling of leaves surrounded him.
Chirps from wild kytlings in the distance accented the symphony of nature. The Kingâs own tamed bird ruffled its feathers and chirped back. He smiled as his finely tuned ears picked up a steady beat, a beat far heavier than an avian heart. Something else caused it, and that something was alone.
He opened his eyes and squinted into the trees. His supernatural vision caught sight of a dark grey shadow moving at speed through the darkness ahead. As it neared, the scent of damp fur and warm breath danced around his nostrils. All these senses swarmed the King long before Ulv Rakos arrived, long before the Ulv sensed the King.
Areth I turned his back to the forest and looked to the cloudy skies, waiting. Behind him, footsteps grew in volume and dropped in frequency until they were no more than a stoneâs throw away.
Without so much as glancing over his shoulder, the King spoke aloud. âAbout time you showed up.â
The Ulv grumbled and growled in his own language to which King Areth was finely attuned. âYouâre early. Youâve brought me a snack?â
âYou will not lay a claw on my kytling. I adore these creatures. So fast. So loyal. So⦠deadly.â
âLoyal? Youâve had it for some time then.â
âActually, I tamed it on the way here, from a wild herd roaming around.â The King ran his hand down the kytlingâs neck, ruffling her feathers, and was rewarded with a soft purr. âShe looks healthier and larger than the others, donât you think? Her violet plumage is exquisite; Iâve never seen one like her.â He pointed to her rounded wings. âLook how the tips of her wings are a radiant emerald colour. Astounding!â
The Ulv huffed in amusement. âI care not for these creatures. To me, it looks like food, but I suppose you need it to keep pace.â
âShe took to me surprisingly well, you know. It was as if she knew me already.â The kytling screeched an ear-splitting, eagle-like screech.
Ulv Rakos covered his ears and crouched, squeezing his eyes and his jaw tight. âShut her up or Iâll do it for you.â
The King glowered. âDonât test me, Ulv Rakos.â He mounted the saddleless kytling and spurred her to run southward.
The Ulv crouched and broke into a sprint, keeping pace with the King and his new companion, narrowing his eyes at both.
As the pair travelled South, Ulv Rakosâ curiosity overpowered him. âDid you bring your shards?â
King Areth I scoffed, âCertainly not. You think me a fool?â
âHow are we supposed to bargain with an insane King without leverage?â
A wide grin painted the Kingâs face, âwho said anything about bargaining?â
âWhat are you planning, King? And where
